The tender flame

Lacy, Al. (Author).

Summary: Grant Smith is 16 and Lydia Reynolds is 14 when they first fall in love. Their "tender flame" continues to burn and, as Grant approaches graduation from West Point, he asks Lydia to marry him. Wedding preparations are postponed, however, when President Polk announces war with Mexico and Grant is called into battle. Lydia is grief-stricken when she is informed that Grant has been wounded and believed dead. But Grant returns two years later, after escaping from a Mexican prison, and is devastated to learn that Lydia has married another. Should he let her know he is alive, or give up his own hopes for happiness?
